FIGHTING IN URBAN TERRAIN
by Nate McSweeney
In
today's battlefield most conflicts are in urban areas. You do have your
Afghan battles, Iraqi push and a few large open terrain firefights but
you don't really see the WW2 all out Rommel assault. Fighting from house
to house is dirty and very up close and personal. In most cases you will
see your target make a face when hit (paintballs do hurt when fired close).
A lot of today's paintball fields have an urban type field or zone (and
sometimes games even take place on military MOUT sites), so here are some
tips to keep you in the fight.
-
1.Attack
one building at a time. Suppress other buildings but concentrate on taking
out one building at a time.
-
2.You will need 2 units to be effective. ASSAULT UNIT and SUPPORT UNIT.
-
The support will cover the assaulting unit and saturate the target with
any means necessary. The assault force will storm the target building
-
3.The support unit engages other buildings and targets as needed. Use paint
launchers to take out the buildings! Nothing clears out a building like
a well placed rocket.
-
4.The assault element moves to the target building on a covered route(use
smoke).DO NOT run in a diagonal route across the street. Make a straight
line to cross the street.
-
A.
Do not hug the walls going down the routes. Rounds bounce of hard surfaces
(except in paintball). Stay about 3 feet away but close enough to use it
if you must.
-
B. If you can assault a building from the top then do so because the lower
floor is usually the enemies strongest point. In most paintball fields
this isn't possible or allowed.
-
C. Throw a grenade into building or room, then go in and clear it. A well
placed grenade can solve any problem. When entering a room the first man
enters low(sweeping room) and takes a watching position to cover whole
room. The others go in and clear room to room doing same sequence.
-
D. Prep the building for defense or stronghold. This means clearing avenues
for fire, Blocking and mining routes of approach and fortifying weak structures.
-
E. Get ready to do it all over again.
Some extra side tips on the above...........
-
1.
Its easier to fight downstairs.
-
2. Do not silhouette yourself climbing around stuff.
-
3. Do not stand right in a window firing out of it. You will be seen and
target by who knows what. Keep 2-3 feet away from the window.
-
4. Block entryways into buildings. On some fields they will let you move
things around. Grab a huge fallen tree and drag it up to a door entry.
You can block them from storming the building easily. GET PERMISSION FIRST!
-
5. Avoid doors and windows while moving from location to location in an
urban environment.
-
6. Move in one rush when running men across urban roads. This is different
when patrolling in enemy territory. When in the bush you cross roads and
paths one at a time and very carefully but quickly.
-
7.Put cloth over windows to keep soldiers hidden.
Use smoke when ever possible. Most fields only allow cool burning smoke
so take the time to find them if you want to use them. ALSO if you do get
your hands on military issued smoke canisters, DO NOT pick them up once
lit. They will burn your hand so badly you will be messed up and unable
to play. I have had one burn my glove to the cannister and go through the
glove and burned leather into my skin. That all happened in the time it
took to pick it up(after lit)and throw it farther away. It almost stayed
attached to the glove.
